En 1973 Lucas dirigió American Graffiti, un film sobre autos y jóvenes. La película ganó el Globo de Oro, el New York Film Critics y el premio de la National Society of Film Critics. Obtuvo también 5 nominaciones al Oscar.
En 1980 escribió y produjo "En busca del Arca Perdida" dirigida por Steven Spielberg obteniendo 5 premios de la academia. También fue co-productor y creador de la historia de "Indiana Jones y el Templo Maldito", estrenada en 1984, nominada a 2 premios de la Academia y obteniendo un Oscar por efectos especiales.
